The Profile Picture Matters: Why We All Need a Headshot

Let’s face it – if social media isn’t a part of your everyday life, you’re definitely in the minority. We regularly check in on those we went to high school with and we look through every single one of our friend’s wedding photos (some call this social media “stalking!”), and just as we scope out others on social media, people are also looking at YOU! When you interview for a job, plan a meeting with a new client, run into an old friend or meet a new one, it is just reality that they are going to pull up one of your social media profile before the next time they see you. The Internet is a virtual reference, and it tells a story about us. The best part is, though, we get to write it!

The prevalence of social media makes it important to present a consistent, professional appearance on your social media pages, and we aren’t just talking about your LinkedIn profile. Regardless of your industry or employment situation, the photo taken with your cousin at the last family reunion or the picture with a drink in your hand just isn’t going to cut it when it comes to making first impressions. This day and age, a professionally taken photo is necessary. We all need a headshot.

When we say headshot, we are referring to a professionally taken photograph that reflects your personal brand. You don’t have to be in a suit (although there’s nothing wrong with a good suit!), and it doesn’t have to be behind an old-school backdrop, either. It is certainly worth investing in a session with a professional photographer to obtain a portrait that portrays you in a positive light. Having a few different headshots can even help others get to know your individual personality and will fill your Google image results with clear, professional photos (and don’t act like you’ve never Googled someone!)
